2021 update: Following the sad loss of our friend Chris Richardson in 2020, this website will continue to be maintained for the foreseeable future, but will no longer be updated. Please keep an eye on the blog/website of the People’s Histreh group instead.

Nottinghamshire Local History Association

NLHA celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2013 with more than 80 Nottinghamshire history societies on its register. The Association publishes Nottinghamshire Historian twice a year, publishes a diary of local societies’ events, and holds an annual day school, the October 2014 event being held jointly with the Thoroton Society.

People’s Histreh

The Histreh group are a bunch of people with different political backgrounds, interested in what has been called ‘history from below‘, ‘grassroots history’ or ‘social history‘. As Nottingham has such a long and turbulent history of socio-economic transformation, disturbance and conflict, there is a lot to be unearthed. Available from their publishing entity Loaf On A Stick Press are also works on Nottingham’s ‘Great Cheese Riot’ of 1766 and the torching of Nottingham Castle during the ‘Reform Riots’ in 1831.

Nottingham Women’s History Group

The group holds regular meetings and arranges several walks each year, details of which are on the web site.

Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Labour History Society

Nottingham Secular Society

This society has regular meetings in Nottingham with guest speakers, including Terry Sanderson and Peter Tatchell duirng 2013/14.
